About Counselling

About Counselling and Psychotherapy

People come for counsellling from all walks of life and with a wide range of problems. Sometimes the reason seems obvious, a bereavement, redundancy,or relationship difficulties.

Some people feel anxious or depressed for no particular reason, or may have come to a point in their lives where everything seems to lack purpose for them.

For some people, memories about the past, painful events in the present or worries about the future, may be preventing them from enjoying life and achieving their aims.

Although family and friends can be supportive, they may not have the time or the objectivity to listen without getting upset or involved. At such times when we seem to have come to the end of our own resources, it can be helpful to talk in confidence with an objective outsider, someone who is trained to listen attentively while you talk through your problems.

A counsellor will not tell you what to do, but aims to help you find your own answers by giving guidance, concentrated time and the impartial view that friends cannot give. They will work with you to help make sense of your difficulties and will seek to encourage you to balance outer resposibilites with inner needs.

Counselling aims to increase understanding of how past experiences may be influencing current behaviour and by allowing space to explore thoughts and feelings about oneself and others, to help restore the ability to function and develop.
